Toxic Chinese Drywall

Could Chinese drywall be a ticking time bomb in your home? Originally thought to be a problem limited to Florida and southeastern states, the Consumer Product Safety Commission currently has complaints from over 3000 homeowners in 37 states including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut with health problems and/or property damage related to the presence of drywall produced in China.

What is Chinese Drywall? In short, the term “Chinese Drywall” refers to drywall imported from China between 2001 and 2008 which contain contaminants that omit hydrogen sulfide, a hazardous gas that has been linked to severe metal corrosion and a number of health related issues such as irritated itchy eyes and skin, nose bleeds, headaches, blurred vision, and respiratory problems.

How big is the problem? That’s the question. Reports show that millions of pounds of Chinese drywall were shipped to the U.S. during the housing boom and restoration efforts following hurricane Katrina and used to build thousands of homes, condos, and office buildings. However, of greater concern is that the same contaminates found in problematic Chinese drywall were also found some American drywall – meaning that this could be just the tip of a very large iceberg if American companies have been re-branding drywall manufactured in China and shipping it across the counrty for higher profit margins.

How can you tell if your home has Chinese Drywall? The signs that a home may have defective drywall include but not limited to the following;

Built or renovated between 2001 and 2008.
Strong sulfur, “rotten egg” smell or chemical odor.
Blackening of electrical wiring, copper plumbing, and air-conditioning coils.
Discoloration of metal jewelry, mirrors, and chrome plated plumbing fixtures.
Mysterious failure of electronic devices such as appliances, computers, and TV’s.
